The number of malaria patients in Vietnam has fallen dramatically with the strong efforts of government, civil society, international organizaitions and from all levels of the health system. Despite this successful control programme, malaria has not completely disappeared in Vietnam. It remains endemic in remote forest border areas of central Vietnam, where standard control activities seem to be less effective. The current challenges and approaches being adopted to ensure successful malaria elimination will be discussed.
