Although historical elimination efforts were typically vertical programs focused on mass delivery of a single intervention, countries attempting to eliminate malaria today are doing so through data-driven expansion of testing and treatment to underserved areas, comprehensive disease surveillance integrating epidemiological and entomological data, and targeted implementation of context-tailored intervention packages. Approaching elimination via systems strengthening increases the sustainability of elimination efforts and provides a model for high endemic countries to follow. This talk will describe the advances made by elimination programs across Central America, Hispaniola, Southern Africa, and the Greater Mekong Subregion and the lessons they offer for accelerating efforts in high endemic countries.
