Helene Hiwat-Van Laar
Hélène Hiwat is an entomologist who started her career in 1997 at the University of Suriname in South America doing biodiversity research in the national rain forests. In 2005 she began working as a vector entomologist for the national Malaria Program, researching Suriname's main malaria vector, Anopheles darlingi, for which she obtained a doctorate degree in 2010. During this time, until 2017 she also headed the Entomology Department of the Bureau of Public Health coordinating work on the study and surveillance of other disease vectors (Triatominae, Aedes mosquitoes, Phlebotominae). Since 2015 she coordinates the Ministry of Health Malaria Program, which is supported by the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and the Inter-American Development Bank.
